What we know!
Volkswagen is poised to present the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE fittingly at the ID. Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland, showcasing a concept that was created in collaboration with BOGNER, the Munich-based luxury sports fashion brand. It aims to carry forth the popularity of the legendary Golf Fire and Ice, which was a surprising success in the 1990s and has achieved cult status of sorts among its adoring fans.
Among its highlights are an exclusive 3-layer paint finish with glass bead effect and numerous details in the interior. The concept is truly an interpretation – and an incredibly fun one at that – of what was an iconic 90s design. Most special is that this GTX has within original materials and accessories from that former model.
Its exterior look!
A complete stand out, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE boasts an exclusive 3-layer paint finish with glass bead effect. This Electric Violet color was specially developed for this unique model and is a reinterpretation of the Golf Mk2’s FIRE and ICE exterior paint. It has a dark blue base coat, with the three-coat paint creating a very special glass-like appearance. Depending on the incidence of light, this color is ever-changing, spanning hues from dark blue to violet and even black.
A roof frame strip adds a sporty accent with the powerful red anodised paint Flaming Red. At the vehicle’s sides is foiling with the geometric FIRE+ICE pattern in transparent matte. Also unique are 21-inch rims which frame and emphasize the dynamic appearance of the concept, with a blue anodised paint finish with glossy twist. The original FIRE+ICE logo from the 1990s adorns the B-pillar and the roof edge spoiler.
A peak within!
Divided in two colors, including an accent Flaming Red for FIRE, the interior is a sight to be seen! The red FIRE is found on the seats and seams on the driver’s side and the seat behind, while the seats and interior on the passenger side are marked by design elements in ice blue “ICE.” The unique FIRE+ICE design is also found on the stainless steel accelerator pedals, replacing the Play/Pause design known from the ID. family. Simply, drivers accelerate with the FIRE logo, and brake by stepping on the ICE.
A laser-engraved FIRE+ICE pattern is also found on the upper part of the instrument panel and the floor mats. Quilted seats are also another key design element, and reflect the design of the current FIRE+ICE down jackets. Within these seats are found the original FIRE+ICE fabric from the 1990s. Overall, the inside is marked by numerous colors as well as features fabrics and elements, all inspired by the BOGNER FIRE+ICE collections.
Power packed!
The ID.3 GTC boasts a powerful motor, large battery and high-charging capacity, with the FIRE+ICE version using the most powerful VW electric motor to date. It has an output of 240 kW and a maximum torque of 545 Nm. This motor has the ability to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, with top speeds electronically limited at 200 km/h. This high-performance drive system is also made clear through the GTX-specific chassis, which comes equipped with stronger stabilisers and Sport DCC adaptive chassis control. The electrical energy is supplied by a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery (net) which can be charged at DC fast-charging stations with up to 185 kkW. Thanks to this battery, drivers recharge from 10 to 80 percent in around 26 minutes. The combined WLTP range is up to 601 km.
In what is a sporty and comfortable model, with design rooted in fashion and creativity, the GTX FIRE+ICE truly reimagines a legend. A tribute to the exclusive Golf Fire and Ice with a reinterpretation of the iconic 1990s design, this one-off and electric hot hatch is a clear spin on a cult classic. With an integration of original materials and accessories, yet entering the EV Era, the GTX and its powerful electric motor is truly a show car. Transferring design ideas from the past to an all-electric modern age, the GTX is a clear example of re-thinking an icon!
