So you’ve decided to buy a new VW Golf. Job done, right? Not quite yet. There are several important differences between the VW Golf models and it’s a personal matter as to which one will best suit your needs. Buying a new car is always a big decision, so you need to take the extra time to make the perfect choice. Luckily, we’ve got your rundown for each model.

Golf

Available as a 4-door hatchback model only, this is the standard model. It has a 1.8 liter turbocharged engine (hello 170 horsepower and 184 lb-feet of torque). This compact car has plenty of cargo space and helps you optimize it with split-folding rear seats. It’s a highly responsive car to drive, with a high-quality interior. The VW Golf has yet again made it into the 10Best list for 2017. Starting price is $19,895.

Golf Sportwagon

This one is the closest model to the standard Golf, with a few extra clever features. It maintains the same engine and horsepower capabilities but adds an extra 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Basically, it combines the sporty handling of the Golf with the extra room of a compact SUV. It also provides more customization and upgrade options, with four different trims to choose from. This combination of factors is why it was number one in US News 2017 Wagons. Starting at $21,580.

Golf Alltrack

Slightly larger again than the Golf Sportwagon, this six-speed automatic car features a brake-based all-wheel-drive system. It gets an extra 6.9 inches of ground clearance, thanks to its raised suspension, but it maintains the Golf’s quick handling. Other features include a 6.5-inch touchscreen and optional adaptive cruise control and emergency braking. Starting at $26,670.

Golf GTI

If getting behind the wheel is as much about thrill as function, you’ll love this sportier version of the Golf. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine reaches up to 210 horsepower and 258 lb-feet of torque. Enhancements on this model, including a performance monitor and Fender® Premium Audio System add a little extra fun. Starting at $25,595.

Golf R

Not so different from the Golf GTI, yet this model has a higher performance than all its Golf siblings. Rev-heads will be happy with up to 292 horsepower, 280 lb-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission, not to mention the Tiptronic and Sport Mode. Extra features are also available to add to the sporty feel of this car, including a dual exhaust with quad tips and sports seats. Starting at $39,375.

e-Golf

E stands for electric, with this unique Golf model. The 2017 model gets an impressive 125 miles per charge from its new, improved lithium-ion battery pack. It does have a lower horsepower at 134, with 214 lb-feet of torque, but this is impressive for an electric engine. Starting at $28,995.

You can’t go wrong with a VW Golf, and taking these features into consideration, alongside your needs and likes, will help you choose the best model.
