Annual Worthersee Treffen - Volkswagen of Akron
This motoring festival showcases the most radical VW and Audi custom-built cars around!
The festival began as a small gathering of VW GTI’s at an Austrian hotel and has grown into a fantastic week-long event that encompasses cars of all types and from across the VW Group. It draws over 100,000 visitors each year.
VW backs the portion of the festival that is presented on the lawn at the beautiful shore of Lake Worthersee. The event coincides with German’s equivalent of “Father’s Day” and is a man’s holiday of sorts.

Wörtherseetreffen is dedicated to models that have been modified by owners to look often completely different than how they came out of the factory! Owners drive up to the event, park and begin a dialogue with other like car enthusiasts. In fact, the social aspect of the festival is even as exciting as the cars themselves! Some visitors arrive days earlier than the event just for the camaraderie and fun!
Visitors come — or should come — to Wörtherseetreffen for a variety of reasons, but foremost it is for the cars plain and simple. It doesn’t matter if you’re into any particular type of car, but at Wörtherseetreffen you get to see and experience so many makes and models. From the latest and hottest wheel design to the most extraordinary custom models around, the festival has it all.

There are mountain roads and picturesque blue/green lakes at Worthersee. Photos just don’t do it justice. It’s something that must be experienced first hand!
There is also the food at the festival that is a show stopper! From Austrian favorites like schnitzels to sweet desserts and more, the festival will satisfy any appetite. Lodging also is available, from the fanciest to the most basic.

Worthersee is also home to the famous “Turbokurve,” and visitors get to see just how this engine works. The town is also the site of the most famous gas station in the world, the Mischkulnig gas station, which is actually viewed from all over the world by a webcam.
The road trip itself to Worthersee is also a main draw, winding you through Germany on the Autobahn, where at some spots there is no speed limit. Dry and sunny weather, a chill and extremely pleasant atmosphere are just a couple more reasons this event is a must-see.
Highlights from Wörtherseetreffen’s past include a plethora of odd, yet memorable cars, including twists on the Golf racer, the VW Type 181, the little VW Transporter, the VW Beetle, the Passat and much more. Embellishments on these vehicles run the gamut and range from massive hood ornaments to outlandish color combinations and more.

Attending the Wörtherseetreffen is truly an overwhelming experience similar to a music festival, but with cars! Nestled in the mountainous and sunbathed south of Austria, the town, and its people, are known to be the friendliest. “Among all the cars on display are those contributed by VW itself. In fact, the event pays homage to Volkswagen and three letters — GTI.”Considered a mecca of sorts for Volkswagen fans and enthusiasts around the world, Wörtherseetreffen ( “treffen” translates to “meeting” in Germany) has grown in number — and popularity — each year. People travel by both boat or car to get there and once there, find the highlight — the main stage — where select fans are given the opportunity to present their love for all things Volkswagen in front of the massive crowds. Other areas of the pavilion include concepts created by Volkswagen’s apprentices at its Wolfsburg and Zwickau bases.
In addition to the displays, many walk the town itself, which becomes its own massive parking lot of sorts. Diverse at every turn, this “lot” will not only grab your attention but give you an opportunity to hear others explain their creation. From A Golf fitted with Lamborghini brakes and Porsche wheels to a beautifully restored Mk1, even the purists will be satisfied!
