Even though fuel prices throughout the country are fairly low, gasoline still takes a big chunk of the budget for many people. You can conserve fuel by following these simple tips, helping you to save money as well.

Never Allow the Engine to Idle

When you’re stopped in a parking lot or waiting to pick someone up, it’s always best to turn off the engine to save fuel. Allowing the engine to idle simply wastes gas and doesn’t help you at all. Some municipalities around the country have bans on engine idling to reduce pollution and improve air quality.

If possible, avoid driving in rush-hour traffic, since it’s likely you’ll end up idling on the freeway when you’re stuck in a traffic jam. Go to work earlier so you can leave early, or take public transportation to prevent the need to drive during high-traffic times.

Check the Tire Pressure

Your tires play an important role in the overall safety and handling of your car, but did you know that they can also alter your fuel economy? When the tire pressure is too low, your car ends up using more gas to compensate. During the winter months, a 10-degree drop in temperature can cause a loss of up to a pound per square inch within each of your tires, so check the pressure more often during the coldest time of the year.

It’s also important to keep up with other routine maintenance, such as oil changes and replacing the fuel and air filters, since these components help to keep all systems running properly.

Slow Down

For many drivers, the thrill of pressing the accelerator is impossible to resist. But driving fast increases the drag on your car, which lowers fuel economy. Keep your speed right at the limit and accelerate slowly to improve efficiency. It might not be quite as much fun as driving fast and hitting the accelerator, but it will keep more money in your pocket to participate in fun activities.

Reduce the Weight

No, you don’t have to shed those unwanted pounds to improve fuel efficiency. This section refers to the excess weight that you’re carrying around in your vehicle. If you store a stroller or play yard for your child in the trunk, or you drive around during the summer with a ski rack on the roof, you’re reducing the aerodynamics of your car and increasing drag. Unless you’re currently using the item, leave it in a closet or garage at home where it won’t have such an impact.

Use Technology to Save

There are a number of free apps available to help you find the best gas prices based on your current location. When your car is running low on fuel, pull up the app and allow it to locate a cheap station nearby. It’s also smart to fill up before your car reaches a quarter tank; if you wait too long, you might end up spending a lot more at the closest station rather than driving to one that offers a better price.

Save money and help the environment by reducing how much gas you use in your vehicle.
