When the mercury rises and the days grow longer, Akron-area residents who feel like hitting the beach have easy access to some of the most scenic stretches of waterfront sand beaches on Lake Erie. These beaches are both public and private. Some feature groomed sand, amenities, and easy access to other area attractions. Other Lake Erie beaches within a short drive of Akron are secluded, with minimal facilities and crowds to match.
1. East Harbor State Park
East Harbor State Park, which is located in Marblehead in Ottawa County, is a gentle stretch of sand near the state’s largest campground and within an hour’s drive to the famous Cedar Point amusement park. This Lake Erie beach is sheltered from wind and current, which causes calm water conditions to predominate much of the year. This effect is magnified by the long and gradual slope of sand that extends from the shore and out into the lake, making it a great place for wading or letting the children splash around. A marina provides access to the beach for boaters, while bike trails can be found throughout the park. To reach East Harbor State Park from the Akron area, head west on Interstate 80.
2. Huntington Beach
A favorite among beachgoing families is Huntington Beach in Bay Village. This beach is part of the Cleveland Metroparks, making it an easy drive from the Akron area. Fingers of rock stretch out into the water, providing an ideal stone pier that is perfect for exploring and socializing, or letting the kids clamber around on the rocks. Huntingdon Beach runs for approximately half a mile in front of tall rock bluffs, which allow beachgoers to get out of the sun when the day is at its hottest to rest or play in the shade. Stairs lead from the bluffs above to this relaxing stretch of sand on Lake Erie’s waterfront, with an on-site concession stand serving up snacks and frozen treats.
3. Headlands Beach State Park
If you want room to stretch out on the sand, then head to Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor by going north on Interstate 77 before picking up Interstate 271 North on the eastern side of the Cleveland Metro area. This is Ohio’s longest beach – a mile of deep sand that attracts sun-loving crowds. One of the state’s most popular parks, Headlands Beach has a long breakwater at the eastern edge with rocks running out into Lake Erie. It is an excellent place to throw out a line, as fishing is permitted. Nearby hiking trails offer you an opportunity to explore the scenic waterfront. An on-site playground keeps children busy, while nearby Headlands Dunes Nature Preserve provides additional opportunities for recreation in its wilderness of sand.
Beat the heat this summer by packing a towel, sunscreen, and cooler and taking a dip at one of the beaches near Akron, Ohio.
