5 Fishing Trip Spots From Akron, OH

If you like to fish, the Akron, Ohio, area offers some great spots. There are also many other fun things to do in the vicinity. Explore a few places this summer. Here are some ideas for road trip fishing destinations, including visits to parks, lakes, reservoirs, and rivers.

Summit Metro Parks

The Summit Metro Parks offer a multitude of fishing experiences. Whether you enjoy pond, lake, or river fishing, they have it all. Many locations are available for fishing. Experienced and new fishermen alike can find an appropriate site.

Many other sports and seasonal activities are available within the parks, such as camping, mountain biking, and swimming. Summit County Metro Parks manages a total of 16 parks.

Springfield Lake

This Akron lake covers 291 acres and contains many varieties of fish. These include largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, and walleye. The north end has shoreline access. A fishing pier, picnic tables, and restrooms make for a pleasant park setting.

If you need to take a break from fishing for a while, you can take 20-minute drive to the Akron Zoo.

Portage Lakes

The Portage Lakes is a chain of 12 reservoirs that are linked together by a series of canals. The canals were built during the 1830s to provide water to the growing city of Akron.

This chain of bass lakes has the honor of being home to state record-holding fishing. The key species found here are largemouth bass, bluegill, red ear sunfish, and channel catfish.

Portage Lakes is located on the south side of Akron. Another interesting location in Akron is the Stan Hywet Hall & Garden. Enjoy a tour of the beautiful mansion and gardens.

Mogadore Reservoir

The Mogadore Reservoir covers 1,000 acres. Woodland and boggy wetland surround it. The reservoir features primitive boat ramps. Boat rental is available from April to the middle of November. The reservoir is known for its bass and catfish.

Other places to visit in the area are the Countryside Campground, Mogadore Reservoir Park, and the Mogadore Boathouse and Marina. The Mogadore Reservoir is about a 16-minute drive southeast of Akron.

Rocky River

A beautiful stream in northern Ohio, the Rocky River is protected by Cleveland Metro Parks. Its location is in the town of Rocky River, which is a suburb of Cleveland. Also included is a chain of access sites for fisherman along the stream.

Fun things to check out in Rocky River include a cigar shop, nightlife, a museum, spa, and shopping. The town of Rocky River is about 50 miles northwest of Akron and close to Lake Erie.

Ohio has many lakes, streams, and ponds to choose from for your fishing delight. All of these choices make finding the perfect spot much easier. Make plans to visit the ones you find most interesting a part of your outdoor summertime recreation.
