Thanks to its beautiful location in the Great Lakes region, Akron, Ohio, has never lacked in outdoor recreational spaces. Whether you’re a local resident or you’re simply visiting, the following parks offer a great chance to escape the daily grind and get back to nature.
Nature Realm
Part of Summit Metro Parks, the 104-acre Nature Realm is a hidden gem that’s been set aside for nature study and enjoyment. The well-kept grounds feature live animals, kids’ areas, and a 10,000-square-foot visitors center with interactive exhibits. Nature Realm also features a 45-foot-deep ravine that visitors can cross on a suspension bridge. A stroll through this park will take you past several gardens, wetlands, two ponds, observation decks, and a grassy prairie. You can even hand-feed the resident birds, which is an experience like none other.
Sand Run Metro Park
If you’re hoping to find a quiet, visually stunning place to jog or walk, head to the 995-acre Sand Run Metro Park. Sand Run offers six separate trails, including the popular Parkway Jogging trail, a challenging Parcours trail, and the strenuous three-mile Mingo trail, which is so rugged it’s been rated as primitive by Summit Metro Parks. The park also features sledding, skiing, and ice skating areas, as well as a soccer field and picnic pavilions.
Portage Lakes State Park
Offering a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities, Portage Lakes State Park is one of the area’s most popular weekend destinations. The 411-acre park is the best place to go swimming, boating, fishing, or hunting for waterfowl. There’s even a great disc golf course that’s been lauded as the best in northeast Ohio. Multiple picnic areas are available at Portage Lakes State Park, as is a leash-free dog park. With so much available for adults, kids, and canine friends, Portage Lakes State Park is a must-experience for the whole family.
Cascade Valley Metro Park
Visitors interested in year-round spots activities should head to Cascade Valley Metro Park. The site offers three lighted softball fields, a baseball field, two soccer fields, a large sledding hill, and opportunities for cross-country skiing. Four trails offer a range of difficulties from easy to difficult, with the moderate Highbridge trail connecting to the Gorge Metro Park, another popular outdoor spot for Akron residents. If you prefer an easy walk, however, opt for the half-mile Overlook trail, which is great for visitors with canes, walkers, wheelchairs, and strollers.
BARC Akron Dog Park
Arguably the best dog park in the area, BARC Akron Dog Park is a furbaby haven. Operated by the non-profit organization Better Akron Recreation for Canines (BARC), the dog park offers plenty of off-street parking, free year-round access, agility obstacles, bench seating, secure double-gated pens, and a doggie drink station with fresh water. All dog parents must abide by the park’s rules, which include properly disposing of waste, making this a safe, thrilling haven for any dog.
