As one of the largest cities in Ohio, Akron has plenty to offer families. If you’re looking for a fun outing to experience with the kids this weekend, consider the following family-friendly activities.
Akron Zoo
Ideal for kids of all ages, the Akron Zoo is a 50-acre facility just west of downtown. Tickets are already affordable at just $12 for adults and $9 for children between the ages of two and 14 (children under two are free), but winter admission is even cheaper at just $7 per person. The zoo is home to more than 700 animals across 90 different species, including African lions, lemurs, jaguars, grizzly bears, red pandas, and bats.
In addition to the animals, the Akron Zoo also boasts a touch tank, an animal show, a carousel, a train, play areas, and a petting zoo. There are also a variety of educational events that take place throughout the year, such as the weekend Snooze at the Zoo.
Akron Symphony
For parents wanting to instill some music appreciation in their kids, the Akron Symphony offers a sell-out series called Concerts for Kids. These interactive programs last about 45 minutes and are great for introducing younger kids to the world of classical music.
Concerts for Kids begins at the Akron Symphony each spring and spaces are limited, so be sure to keep an eye out on the calendar and make your reservations in advance. The facility also offers a number of performances that are ideal for teens, including the upcoming Cirque de la Symphonie.
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Ideal for children and teenagers of all ages, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad offers families an unforgettable experience. One of the oldest tourist excursion railways in the country, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs through the heart of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park as it travels from Independence through Akron. The trip lasts approximately three hours, and all-day passes allow you to hop on and off as you’d like.
While on board the train, an audio tour will allow you to immerse yourself in the sounds and stories of the Cuyahoga Valley. Learn about the earliest settlements, the creation of the national park, and the railway itself. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad offers a number of special events throughout the year, including the autumn-themed Pumpkin Express and wintertime’s Holiday Jubilee.
Ice Skating at Lock3
With winter just around the corner, families throughout Akron are gearing up for ice skating at Lock3. The popular outdoor ice rink is the state’s largest of its kind, offering more than 10,000 square feet of space. Best of all, skating is completely free, although you must sign a waiver, and skate rentals are just $3. Concessions are also available during rink hours, so be sure to bring the whole family to Lock3 this winter!
