One of the great theaters built by renown architect John Eberson, the Akron Civic Theatre is a beautiful structure that hosts all sorts of interesting events each season. To get an idea of what’s available, take a look at the four diverse events below.
Jay Owenhouse in Dare to Believe
On Friday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. you can see the legendary escape artist Jay Owenhouse perform his show: Dare to Believe. Dangerous traps, seemingly impossible escapes, and beautiful big cats like Bengal tigers all come together for one of the most astounding and inspiring live shows in America.
Reserved seating is either $31.50 or $41.50 depending on the seat. The show also offers VIP Save the Wild tickets with the best seats in the house, a souvenir lanyard, a backstage meet and greet with Jay and one of his tigers before the show, and more. Proceeds from the VIP tickets go toward saving tigers and cheetahs from extinction.
Avenue Q
On June 8, 9, and 10 at 8:00 p.m., Akron residents can see the 2004 Tony Triple Crown winner for best book, best score, and best musical. Avenue Q tells the story of college graduate Princeton and his new life in NYC, surrounded by colorful characters with more than a few quirks. Don’t bring younger kids; this show combines puppetry with cutting, raw humor covering topics like sex, alcohol, and pornography.
Cabaret seating for Avenue Q is only $20, but seating is limited. Schedule a ticket early if you’re interested or check up frequently if the day you’d prefer is fully booked.
Mary Poppins
Sponsored by the Akron Civic Theatre Women’s Guild, the Akron All City Musical group presents a live stage performance of one of the most enduring live action Disney movies ever made. It tells the classic and heartwarming tale of the magical and wise nanny who teaches the troubled Banks family what really matters in life.
Mary Poppins hits the stage on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. and June 17 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. General admission is only $10, and reserved seating is only $25.
Dancing With the Stars: Hot Summer Nights
This touring event is a followup to the smash hit Dancing with the Stars: We Came to Dance from the past winter. Experts from every major school of modern dance and ballroom will perform in dazzling and provocative duets, group numbers, and new pieces directed and choreographed by Emmy nominee Mandy Moore. Performers include Britt Stewart, Hayley Erbert, Lindsay Arnold, Sharna Burgess, Artem Chigvintsev, Keo Motsepe, Emma Slater, and many more.
