Volkswagen is making a new truck

What we know!

South America is poised to get its own Amarok – with a new generation launching in 2027 from South America and for South America. Production will take place at the Pacheco plant, building on 15 years of local pick-up truck expertise.

This truck’s unveiling is all part of the VW brand putting its global future plan into action. This model will pave the way for the next generation of mid-size pick-up trucks as a successor to the Amarok.

It is being developed with the South American market specifically in mind, and will serve to strengthen the strategically vital pick-up segment in this region. The overall goal of the brand is to be the global technology leader among volume manufacturers by 2030. A key part of this will be the move to expand the brand’s position in regional markets and the development of market-specific product solutions.

According to Thomas Schafer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and head of the Brand Group Core: “This investment strengthens our position in a region that is strategically important for the Volkswagen brand.” He added that “regional growth and localisation are important elements of our global plan for the future.”

Representatives of Volkswagen Latin America have noted that Argentina is a key component of their South American strategy with this significant investment serving to bolster and reinforce their confidence in the country’s industrial capabilities.

The new Amarok will serve to set all new standards in the area of performance, innovation and sustainability. It will combine VW’s design and DNA, and be backed by 15 years of experience and more than 770,000 Amarok’s produced at the Pacheco plant. It will feature cutting-edge software and advanced tech, resulting in a product that will compete quite nicely in a modern-day market.

Through this new pick-up and in investing in the Pacheco plant so as to target specifically requirements of the new model generation, VW is introducing new production technology, optimising digital processes and increasing emergency efficiency.

In terms of its design, the new Amarok for South America could most likely be mechanically related to the Maxus Interstellar X, which indicates a switch from a ladder-frame chassis to a monocoque body. The dual-cab pickup is sold in China equipped with 2.5-liter diesel and dual-motor electric drivetrains. It is unclear yet if VW’s V-6 diesel engine would fit under hood. And, instead of a combustion engine, the electric version of the Chinese trunk has a front trunk.

In addition to the Amarok, VW also sells the small Saveiro, which has been in existence since the early 1980s.

While trucks developed by two brands is not typically a successful scenario, it is not the same in this case as VW and SAIC have been collaborating in China for decades. By melding their expertise, they are making wise moves, such as using nearly half of the factory machinery for the Amarok from the existing Taos production line.

A new truck for South America is just one of the many ways VW is meeting the needs of motorists on a global scale. South America bound and determined! A new generation is on the horizon!
