What we know!
While production of the beloved VW Type 2 Microbus ended long ago, the vehicle’s popularity didn’t. In fact, what was born in the 1950s and rooted deeply in nostalgia has continued to this day in terms of adoration from the motoring public. Despite the challenge of slipping the new ID.Buzz EV into the current lineup, Volkswagen has done so with optimism, offering an electric drivetrain along with modern levels of refinement, all but inconceivable two decade ago, let alone when the bus was born in the 1950s.
Its highlights include tasteful styling that pays homage to the past, a spacious interior and an evocative design that carries many strong memories forward.
In terms of size, measuring against a first-generation microbus, the 195.4-inch ID.Buzz adds 26.9 inches in length, and its 78.1-inch width is greater by 10.4 inches. Its height measures in at 76.2 inches, and it is lower than the original model by 0.2 inches. Its wheelbase is where the biggest change is realized, with the ID.Buzz’s 131.1-inch span stretching a whopping 3 feet longer than the original. In modern-day terms so as to compare, the ID.Buzz is 9.8 inches shorter and 0.4 inches narrower than a Honda Odyssey, yet stands a solid 6.6 inches taller.
Presented only as an EV, the ID.Buzz uses a modified version of the Modular Electric Drive Matrix platform that currently underpins VW Group products such as the VW ID.4 Crossover. It is presented with two powertrains, a single, rear-mounted electric motor that produces 282 horsepower and an all-wheel-drive version that comes with two motors and pumps out 335 horses.
Thanks to an 86.0-kWh battery, drivers enjoy a 234-mile EPA range for the single-motor version and 231 miles for the dual-motor. The all-wheel-drive model managed about 190 miles on a 75-mph highway test.
In other highlights, the ID.Buzz boasts 6174 curb weight, which is more than 1,600 pounds over the fully loaded Odyssey by comparison. It propels from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and is presented with accurate and consistent steering.
Within is a vision of minimalism, yet far from inferior, with subtle accents repeated throughout and a nice Dune color scheme that is a perfect balance of a creamy off-white and tan. Two additional themes are Copper and Moonlight. In a recently tested version, an ID.Buzz had captain’s chairs for the first and second rows, and a quasi-captain setup for the third. An
instrument panel and infotainment screen within are standard VW fare, while a massive windshield offers wonderful outward visibility and is coupled with an equally massive dashboard.
Three trims are offered with this new model, including the Pro S, Pro S Plus and a launch-only First Edition. Even with the base Pro S, the Buzz includes three-zone climate control, a power tailgate, power sliding doors and the full set of active safety tech. Pro S Plus version also adds a head-up display, Harman Kardon audio, a retractable tow hitch and more. Those opting for the Pro S Plus enjoy a panoramic roof, roof cross bars and the two-tone look as standard.
Buyers can also select from three solid exterior colors, including Metro Silver, Candy White or Deep Black Pearl. A multitude of fun two-tone options are also offered, including Candy White and Mahi Green, among others.
When it comes to design, ride quality and intelligent interior packaging, the ID.Buzz surely delivers, and with a touch of nostalgia on its side, is more than just novelty appeal, but a wonderful choice for today’s buyer seeking a leading-edge EV.
