Volkswagen Teases ID.One

What we know!

Expected to come in at a price tag of just under $21,000 in Europe, this vehicle, expected to be named the ID1, has a license plate, which when illuminated slightly, appears to be styled “IDONE.” Most notable when it comes to appearance is the expressive headlamps, which are a large departure from the older ID language and are a bit aggressive, complete with narrowed eyes and furrowed brows. This provides a stark contrast compared to the blobular, generic look of the ID4’s front fascia. In addition, the squared off lens covers, which intersect with the round internal elements, are another style cue. Engineered primarily for front-wheel drive cars and with battery sizes undisclosed at this time, the ID2.all had an estimated WLTP range of 280 miles.

Back to the ID.1, boasting high quality and great automotive engineering, and despite its scowling eyes, a more “friendly” lower fascia is presented. It actually appears to be an upturned smile at the lower intake, with vertical lighting elements that are like “dimples,” with a narrow hood accentuating the fenders. This actually appears somewhat like the basic proportions of the Renault 5 E–Tech, which features a more distinctive style.

When it comes to more details on the vehicle itself, there is not much information, besides its partially shadowed front. By March, VW plans to unveil the concept version, featuring unrealistically large wheels or tiny bladelike side mirrors. In 2027, a production version is expected to follow, on the heels of a production version of the ID2all concept. This version appears like a scaled-down Mk.VIII Golf, with its quasi-ID styling, yet a similar lower fascia treatment like on the IDone.

While electric offerings in Europe continue on pace, only in America are the ID.4 and ID.Buzz VW’s electric offerings, with no clear plan as to what comes next. The teaser that was revealed for the entry-level EV was done so at an event in Wolfsburg, Germany, featuring a design that has what appears to be a gloss-black panel and illuminated VW logo. Thin vertical LED running lights sit on the outer edges of the bumper.

The ID.1, which will be a forbidden fruit in America, will fall in line below the ID.2, expected to go on sale in Europe in 2026, and will be an evolution of the ID.2all concept shown in 2023. Both models will sit atop the MEB platform, with the ID2 carrying a base price of $26,000.

Meanwhile, VW is also planning for the long-running Golf to spawn an all-electric variant for its next generation, although it is not clear if this will also serve as a replacement for the ID.3. The electric Golf is expected to ride on the new SSP platform, with VW moving the gas-powered Golf’s production to the Gulf of Mexico so as to make room at the Wolfsburg factory.

There’s no doubt about it that the ID line of electric cars has been met with overwhelming popularity in Europe and other parts of the globe. Since VW launched the ID.3, more than 1.35 million ID-branded vehicles have sold, 500,000 of which have been the ID.3.

Nine new models will be launched by 2027, and the news is exciting. In what will be the most affordable electric car, VW is paving the way, with it being nearly two years since the automaker unveiled the ID.2all concept as a peek into its future.

With a teaser of this all-new electric hatchback in 2027, there is much to anticipate. All part of a series of affordable EVs for the European market, the ID.1 and its key style cues are taken at “face value!” See what’s in store with the electrified future of VW – but on American shores!
