You’re about to find out…Due to the growing popularity of mountain biking, the favorite sport of millions, Volkswagen has unveiled a concept that is truly a transformation of sorts, with a cool off-road camper trailer with matching wheels, perfect for any adventure. With this Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp Concept, on display at this year’s New York International Auto Show, an Atlas has become in essence a mountain biker’s touring machine, complete with rugged capability that results in the ultimate outdoor getaway vehicle. It is customized with a lift kit, all-terrain tires and a compact camper trailer. There are even off-road LED light bars at both the front and rear. This gives VW’s three-row crossover even more to love!

This concept, painted in matte gray with orange accents, is rooted in a 2019 Atlas SEL Premium that is powered by the 276-hp VR6 engine paired with 4MOTION all-wheel-drive, giving it an off-road presence that is incredible. Add to that custom fifteen 52 brand Traverse MX Concept wheels wearing 265/70R17 all-terrain tires debuted on the Basecamp, and the result is a vehicle that rides 1.5 inches higher due in great part to coil-over springs from H&R Special Springs. Other additional features include off-road LED light bars, a roof rack system with bike holders and protective interior accessories from Volkswagen.

With a rugged look and equipped to make an all-out adventure with bikes in tow, the Basecamp has off-road capability without a doubt. Adding to the allure of the Concept is that it is shown with a HIVE EX compact expedition trailer with matching wheels and tires. These practical camping features are presented with all the comforts of home including a queen-sized bed, portable toilet, a hot shower, kitchenette with a stove sink and a compact refrigerator and freezer combo! There is also a large roof rack for anything that does not fit inside, as well as an LED light bar to help you navigate the dark outdoors. The roof sports a FrontRunner Slimeline II expandable roof-rack system with a low profile making it easier to load your bike. This also creates less wind drag than taller basket-type racks.
