What we know!
When it comes to the powertrain of the new Tourer, it is expected to match that of the ID.7 hatch. That translates into 77- and 86-kwh battery options, with the smaller unit expected to reach the U.S. Just one powertrain configuration has been unveiled for the hatch, which is a 282-hp motor at the rear axle. An all-wheel-drive option adding a second motor at the front axle is expected down the line!
By comparison, the ID.7 is currently sold with 77-and 89-kilowatt-hour batteries and a range of up to 430 miles.
The Tourer will ride on the VW Group’s MEB platform which is designed for mainstream, high-volume electric vehicles. Its look can be best described as elegant yet powerful, a full-sized hatchback version with generous space both within and inside the trunk. With its style borrowed from the saloon, it is expected that the Tourer’s front and rear will be identical to the regular ID.7, aside from the extra mass of the long-roof body style. In addition, the curved silver detailing that runs from the A-pillar to the rear of the saloon is expected to be carried over.
A large 15-inch touchscreen will find its spot in the middle of the dash, with permanent climate control functions beneath it. A small driver’s display embedded behind the steering wheel results in a more minimalistic look.
Thanks to short overhangs and a long wheelbase, the cargo space within is ample, measuring 19.3 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 60.5 pubic feet when they are folded flat, allowing for comfortable storage.
The Tourer, which is rooted in efficiency, follows six decades of business in the wage segment for Volkswagen. With its sleek profile and aerodynamically optimized body, the Tourer boasts a drag coefficient of 0.24, making it just minimally less streamlined than the electric sedan and along the lines the ID.7 limousine. It is slightly off the sedan’s 0.23 rating cd rating, translating the fact that the lower the figure, the more aerodynamically efficient a vehicle performs.
This Tourer, in comparison to the new VW Passat, which is another VW-badged wagon not planned for the U.S., is smaller in a five-seat configuration. And, just like the ID.7 sedan, the wagon variant will be manufactured at VW’s Eden plant in Germany. It is an example of the automaker’s first all-elected estate to debut next year.
The Tourer is also the second MEB-based model to be manufactured in the north west of Germany.
With this product, the electric wagon segment grows. While many details have not yet been revealed, teaser images in its full camouflaged suit released with the zero-emissions estate will be followed by more in the coming months. Information still outstanding, including the final design, is what markets the vehicle will be sold. It is important to note that this car was previewed by the ID.Space Vizzion concept in 2019 and will essentially be an ID.7 saloon with a bigger boot. That saloon stakes claim to 435 miles of range on a single charge when equipped with the larger 86kWh battery. In addition, it gets a 282bhp motor, up to 200kW rapid charging and a 15-inch touchscreen at the center of its dash.
While this first-ever wagon style won’t make its way to U.S. shores, it is one to watch!
